| More
good news! This past Sunday, John Parkey was presented to
the congregation as the new Discipleship minister. Many
have come to recognize John through his preaching in adult
services over the past 8 months. This week we’d like
to tell you more about John, his family and the new role
he will be leading.
John is a 1993 graduate
of Johnson Bible College, where he majored in preaching.

know that preaching
is ‘in his blood’ as he is a 5th generation preacher.
After college, John began his ministry as the student minister
at Campbellsville Christian Church in Campbellsville, Kentucky.
John served the Campbellsville congregation for 5 years, before
coming to OCC in January of 2000.
Our Student Ministry (middle and high school) has tripled in size
under John’s leadership and God’s blessing. Discipleship
(D) groups were started so that students could connect with one
another and their adult leaders while growing in their faith.
Sixteen groups now meet weekly. Student worship services (Daily
and Overflow) also had their start under John’s leadership.
In addition, John initiated the Arizona mission trips, girls retreats
and the Junior class retreats to further extend and enrich students
in their faith
John and his wife, Val, have two children, Riley (7) and Beau
(4). His interests include spending time with his wife and kids,
fishing, playing basketball, mountain biking and reading. His
favorite authors include Donald Miller, Andy Stanley and John
Eldredge. His favorite thing about ministry is, “seeing
people relinquish control of their lives over to Jesus”.
In his new Discipleship role, John will oversee adult education,
small groups, and the mid-week Greenhouse programming. In addition,
he will also be part of the speaking team, along with Bill Geiger
and Aaron Brockett. John will begin his Discipleship role immediately,
but will also be involved in transitioning the Student Ministry
over the next few months. A search team will soon be appointed
to look for the individual God has prepared to lead the Student
Ministry into the future. Please extend your congratulations,
encouragement and prayers to John and Val as John begins his new
role.
