Girls'
Night Out
By Tammy

On Tuesday,
January 9, 2007, the OCC Women's Ministry wanted to start the
New Year off right by having a Girls' Night Out. This was not
just your typical girls' night out, but a road trip to Southeast
Christian Church to help support and kick off their new semester
of women's Bible studies and hear gifted author and speaker, Carol
Kent. Some of you may recall hearing from Carol at our live simulcast
“THRIVE”, in the spring of 2006, or even the Bible study, “When
I Lay My Isaac Down”, which also concluded in the spring
of 2006.
The Girls'
Night Out event started with praise and worship for a crowded
room of over 200 women. It was truly remarkable to be in a room
crowded with women who were all praising God!
Next, Carol
spoke and shared with us her personal encounter of having to sacrifice
her only son, Jason, who was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy
and a lieutenant in the Navy, to the unthinkable – being incarcerated
for the murder of his wife's ex-husband. The focus of her message
was not the murder or trial, but how her life was forever changed.
She spoke of having to have unshakable faith during the unthinkable
circumstance, the power of relinquishment, the power of heartache,
the power of community, the power of faith and the power of speaking
up. Carol took us through her personal battle with laying her
“Isaac” down and letting God have him. Carol's son is still incarcerated
and living out a life term for his conviction. However, Jason
is now leading chapel and leading inmates to know Jesus Christ.
Carol ended on that note and concluded with a salvation prayer
in which many women accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
The evening
concluded with a review of the various women's Bible studies that
Southeast Christian has to offer. The evening was the best Girls'
Night Out that I have had in quite a while, but the whole evening
really got me excited for our upcoming women's Bible study by
Beth Moore, “Believing God.” I really look forward to having a
weekly Girls' Night Out during the Beth Moore Bible study. It's
still not too late to join in on the fun. The new study will start
this week. If you are interested, please sign up at the Women's
Ministry section of the information desk. Spending time in God's
Word is truly the best way to start out the New Year!
