Middle
School CIY
By Jon Maynard
Nothing
says “Welcome to Middle School Ministry” like an hour and a half
ride on a school bus that is filled to capacity. As the leader,
you are constantly worried about something going wrong. What if
we're late? What if our registration was messed up? What if the
hotel gave our rooms to Southeast? What if we lose a student?
What if the bus breaks down…again? There are millions of scenarios
that play through your head, but as soon as you enter the Convention
Center and see the flood of students all running around, excited
about what is about to happen, some of that worry melts away .
The
videos start to play, the music begins to thump, and the worship
band takes the stage. Your eyes scan the crowd and you see the
faces of the students, illuminated by the lights from the stage.
Each face riddled with wonder and expectation, and in your heart
you pray that they do not get lost in the spectacle - that the
lights, the sound, and the music do not distract them from what
is supposed to happen here. You want them to come face to face
with Christ.
This
year's theme is simple and straight to the point: “JESUS”. They
tell the students that Jesus has a purpose and a calling on their
lives, and that this calling is huge. Christ wants them to do
something big.
You
scan the crowd again and see the faces of the students illuminated,
not by the lights from the stage, but by the idea that maybe,
just maybe, God wants to do something through them. You rest assured
knowing that these students were not lost in the spectacle of
the event, but in the reality of Jesus and His calling on their
lives.
