Serving
the Community
by John Parkey
You may
have noticed the pile of white garbage bags last Sunday at the
corner of Preston Hwy. and Mt. Washington Rd. You may have even
noticed a change in the landscape on that corner as well. The
ditch was cleaned out and the weeds and underbrush were removed.
Then again, you may not have taken notice at all. That’s
ok. When you leave church today, give it a glance.
Last Saturday morning, December 1, despite the mildly overcast
sky and cool temperatures, a host of Okolona Christian Church
volunteers ventured out to serve the community in a clean-up project.
In teams of 7-10 people, armed with gloves, orange vests and trash
bags we set out picking up trash on both sides of Preston Hwy.,
north and south of the stoplight at Mt. Washington Rd. We also
did the same on Mt. Washington Rd. heading east from the stoplight.
A handful of men and high school students armed with rakes, shovels
and chainsaws went to work on the ditch at the corner. Everyone
worked hard and worked well into the afternoon.
It was a beautiful sight seeing God’s people care for our
community by sprucing up the place. Maybe some will notice. Maybe
they won’t. That’s ok. We love the people in the South
Jefferson/North Bullitt area and we want them to know it. I hope
this one little opportunity to show love will give someone a new
perspective on the Church. Maybe it will even intrigue them enough
to come and check out what we’re like and what we’re
all about.
If and when they show up, my hope is they realize the extent of
our love for them and for one another. A love that filters down
from the love that God the Father has for us. May we be known
by our love.
“A new command I give you: Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love
one another.”
John 13:34-35
