Student
Mission Trip '07
By
Jon Maynard, Middle School Student Minister

During
the week of July 21-28, a group of 13 high school students and
4 adult sponsors took their faith and put it to work down in the
Big Easy. They teamed with Operation Nehemiah to help “rebuild
the walls” literally and figuratively. While in New Orleans ,
our team was able to help finish the inside demolition of one
house that belonged to a nun named Sister Jenny. This work really
stretched the students. It was dirty, and took a long time, but
seeing the look on Sister Jenny's face when she walked into her
home was all that our students needed.
Some
of the students helped drywall the house of Keith Mason, a Veteran
who is living off of disability. His home was flooded with nine
feet of water. Keith
brought an authentic Cajun lunch for the students to show his
appreciation. Our students were also able to go to the largest
FEMA trailer park in the U.S. This park was named the Renaissance
Village . Renaissance means “rebirth” and while visiting that
park many of the students realized that the name really did not
fit. Many of the people in the park feel stuck and unable to get
back on their feet. The students came face to face with what Christ
felt in Matthew 9:36:
“When
he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
At
the park our student took part in a survey that was being distributed
by LSU. Through the survey many of our students got to hear frightening
stories about life in New Orleans after the hurricane, and they
were able to share that, even though there is darkness all around,
Christ offers hope to those who have fallen. Thanks to all for
their prayers and support.
