Believe 2008: "Connect" - Middle School
CIY
by Jon Maynard, Middle
School Minister
On February 15 forty-six
middle school students and fourteen adults left from OCC's parking
lot and headed up to Cincinnati, Ohio for the 2008 CIY Believe
conference. The students had their bags full of the one necessary
item (sugar in any form) and the adults packed their bags with
an extra helping of patience and the only weapon that can get
you through a weekend with middle school students, a good sense
of humor.
We dropped our stuff off
at the hotel and headed to one of the most amazing conferences
in the US. The theme for this year was CONNECT. The students followed
the Israelites out of Egypt and discovered that God MADE them
to connect with him, and that God WANTS to connect with them.
The students were challenged to LOOK, LISTEN, and SEE how they
can connect with God and how this connection will affect the world
around them.
Along with the awesome
teaching (done by Steve Carter of Mars Hill Church in Grand Rapids,
MI) the students took part in a very dynamic and student centered
worship experience. With over five thousand middle school students
in attendance, you can only imagine the amount of energy that
conference center contained. This is a trip that we make every
year, and is one of the best events that we take part in.
If you want to get involved
with student ministry there are many options. You can be a volunteer
(contact student ministers, Jon Maynard, or Jesse De Young, see
below), you can encourage your child to attend the student ministry
programs at OCC, or you can swing by the student services booth
to see for yourself what is going on. Hope to see you soon.
