Divorce Workshop Notes
On February 26, Dr. Dennis
Kaufman led our latest “Breaking Free” workshop dealing with the
challenges of an unwanted divorce. Dr. Kaufman's presentation
focused on the spiritual and emotional care needed to help in
the post-divorce recovery process. Sixteen people attended
the workshop and many shared a range of present and past struggles.
It was healing to see others experiencing the same pain and comforts
and to know that one is not alone. The evening helped attendees
renew their hope and trust in Christ as they move toward a brighter
future.
As the body of Christ,
we are to ‘rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those
who mourn'. In today's culture most of us will come into
contact with friends or family going through an unwanted divorce.
Christ has called each of us to be sensitive to the pain and struggles
of those around us – to offer His love and acceptance. Who
in your life may God be calling you to walk beside?
Working Out of
Your Spiritual Values
A.
When we experience any kind of emotional injury, we have a very
important choice to make. Will I respond to the pain out of my
“core
hurt” or out of my “core values”?
B.
Responding out of our hurt almost always leads to attacking or
avoidant
behavior. Responding out of the values God has given us leads
us to a
more effective way of solving the problems that lie before
us.
C.
Some primary Biblical values that can lead us through this
shadowy valley are:
1.
A recognition of the high standard God places on our
vows.
2.
Giving our marriage the best chance for healing, thus
reducing regrets.
3.
Acknowledging our weaknesses and moving away from
our defensive
posture.
4.
Acting with integrity when it comes to things like
settlements, custody
battles, etc.
5.
Finding a balance of truth/grace toward those who
have done us
emotional harm.
