Connecting Class
by
John Teensma
Twenty
new members joined Bill Geiger and a number of the OCC staff and
elders in the Fellowship Room on May 16 to participate in the
Connecting to OCC class. After a nice meal of ham and hash brown
casserole, Bill asked everyone to introduce themselves and to
answer one of two questions: how they came to OCC or what volunteer
had impressed them the most upon coming to OCC. Many of the newcomers
were introduced to OCC by friends or family members, and some
had been curious about the new church building in their neighborhood.
Surprisingly, there were some who had been members previously
and were returning.
After
welcoming everyone, Jonathan Colbert covered the five strategies
of an OCC member: Surrender, Search, Serve, Study and Support.
New
members were informed of the importance of corporate worship,
faithfulness in tithing, building relationships with unchurched
people and inviting them to church and church activities. Also
discussed was the need for each new member to search within themselves
as to what they do best, and to use those skills to serve a recognized
ministry. Bill Geiger urged all new members to use the education
opportunities offered at OCC and develop personal study habits.
He explained the Elective Classes, and the Wednesday night Greenhouse
program and the associated small group ministry, which is held
during fall and winter months. He also stressed the importance
of unity and harmony at OCC.
At the
end of the meeting, each new member was asked to select one or
two ministry interests from a prepared list. It was stressed that
they should choose only those ministries in which they have a
genuine interest or aptitude.
If for some reason you have not attended this
class, you have missed a good one! This class will be repeated on
a regular basis. Watch for the next one and be sure to sign up.
