Thriving at OCC
by Laura Kemper
On Saturday, November 12, the OCC
Women’s Ministry hosted THRiVE, a live simulcast from Atlanta,
GA, featuring 10 christian speakers and Ashley Smith, the “unlikely
angel” who persuaded Brian Nichols, the Atlanta courtroom
gunman, to surrender to police. It was a Saturday well spent.
Early birds started arriving around 8:15 and enjoyed hot coffee
and Danish – a little fuel for the day. Before things got
started we had a pre-recorded message of encouragement from Debbie
Dunbar (oops, Riggs), the Women’s Ministry Team Leader,
to let us know that every section of the auditorium was prayed
over in the 48 hours before the simulcast.
I could write a page on each speaker. They shared their experiences,
insight, research, and hearts with us. We laughed, cried, sang,
prayed, worshipped and learned how to become women of significance.
Michelle McKinney Hammond was a favorite. Her sassy, lay it on
the line style was fun and honest. We learned that as women, we
have the gift of influence and are to use that to change one house
at a time. Shaunti Feldhahn told us about her research on the
inner lives of men. Shhhh! It’s top secret – “For
Women Only”. Carol Kent shared an incredibly heartwrenching
personal testimony. I don’t think there was a dry eye in
the place. And everyone’s favorite¸ Liz Curtis Higgs,
reminded us we are all beautiful in the eyes of the Lord.
It was an awesome day and we couldn’t have done it without
the help of many volunteers. We especially want to thank the men’s
ministry volunteers who so graciously took care of everything
behind the scenes. They served breakfast, snacks, lunch, AND cleaned
up. You guys were awesome! Also, thanks to Harold Mahan who made
this whole thing work and probably learned a little more about
women than he wanted to. Our God was hard at work that day and
the blessings flowed. And ladies, remember, when you wake up tomorrow
morning and look in the mirror, don’t forget – TA
DA!!!
