White Mills Disability Camp
by Pam LaRocco

Throughout OCC’s history, a few children managed to find
ways to minister alongside their parents. In the early 90’s,
a group of concerned youth sponsors recognized the need to develop
opportunities for students to serve the Body in real ways. At
that time, older students began to minister to their peers. In
1996 K.I.D.S. (Kids In Divine Service) Celebrate began and provided
a host of opportunities for elementary - senior high students
to serve younger children weekly. Youth Worship continued to expand
the horizons of student service. Now elementary children –
senior high students serve in many capacities with children ages
0 - 18 years. Several of these students have earned their Teacher
Certification, and share God’s Word weekly. OCC’s
student servants serve with excellence. It’s hard to imagine
doing ministry without them!
This summer, elementary - high school students broaden the scope
of service again within their community through 2 unique opportunities
at White Mills Christian Camp. At Preschool Day Camp, a group
of kids served as greeters and large group coordinators, and in
the teaching sessions, through drama. One of our students actually
wrote her own lesson and taught a session! The new camp director
noted their service and complimented them on their maturity and
ability. At the Disabilities Camp, our kids facilitated crafts,
lead worship, participated in the talent show as “The Beatles”
and became buddies to a disabled camper for the day. Their presence
brightened up the campers’ day.
Every
one of us is given a unique gift or talent to share in the Body
of Christ. The impact made by students ministering to other students
is uniquely effective. Their active presence within the Body is
such a blessing. So, the next time you see a student servant please
let them know how much you appreciate them.
