Even with a brief glance of the past four decades, it is apparent
that the hand of God has been upon Okolona Christian Church. Although
we are at an exciting time right now, the past history of our
church has been filled with such times. God is certainly to be
praised for working through the lives of so many people to accomplish
His glorious work.
South Louisville Church
was the mother congregation to the Okolona body. They had dreams
to begin a church in this growing part of the city, so on November
27, 1955, the first services were held in Southern High School
auditorium. On that day of beginning, 72 people were in attendance.
The present tract of
land on Manslick Road was purchased in February, 1956. Since then,
there have been five separate building programs and two facility
upgrades that have brought our building to where it is today.
In each case, the overwhelming generosity of Okolona members has
enabled the church to improve facilities and continue ministry
programs.
In September of 1975,
the Okolona congregation birthed her first church, known as the
North Bullitt Christian Church. The body of believers has given
the Restoration Movement a strong influence in the very southern
tip of the Louisville metropolitan area.
The impact of the Okolona
family can literally be felt around the world. While we continue
to meet the needs of the community around us, we also support
several missions and missionaries throughout the U.S. and the
world. Over one quarter of all OCC's general offerings are directed
to mission work for both domestic and worldwide efforts.
Throughout her existence,
the church has remained true to the New Testament principles on
which she was founded. In a world of rapid change, she has held
inflexible to the truth of the gospel message while being flexible
in nonessential areas in order to reach more people.
Our history is a picture
of faithfulness. And now, God led us to another step of faith
on June 28, 1998, OCC dedicated 42 acres of prime land on the
corner of Preston Highway and Mt. Washington Road for campus relocation.
On September 12, 2004,
we held our first worship services at our new campus. This
is enabling us to meet the growing needs of our congregation and
reach more people in our community with the life-changing good
news of Jesus Christ.
May we continue in our faithfulness like
those who have preceded us and may God continue to receive all
the credit for every good thing that has happened at OCC in the
past, present, and future!
