What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday has been celebrated throughout church history by Protestants and Catholics alike. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a season focused on reflection, repentance, and fasting, culminating in the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter. Prior to His crucifixion Jesus spent 40 days in the desert fasting and being tempted by Satan. This same period of time is set aside today to encourage believers to focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice and resurrection.
The ashes symbolize death and repentance, focusing our attention on our sinfulness and our need for a Savior. This season of reflection gives us a heightened appreciation for the reality of Easter: Christ’s victory over sin and death – extended to us!
