Best Kept Secret

Are you ever tempted to toot your own horn? To draw attention to yourself for something good and worthwhile you’ve accomplished? Every person longs for applause at times. We want to be recognized for our accomplishments… to be praised by the people. This is why we have award ceremonies and trophies and certificates of accomplishment. We celebrate the work of others with Halls of Fame for just about every industry. And while it’s not wrong to celebrate accomplishments, living only for public applause seems a bit shallow.

That’s why we find it refreshing when we learn that a particular famous person is kind and friendly to “ordinary” people. Or when we discover that an ultra-rich person lives simply and gives generously. Or when we find that an activist is actually more active behind-the-scenes for their cause than they are for the cameras. And it’s especially endearing if we learn that they are not putting on a show.

When it comes to our faith, it can be tempting to make ourselves appear holier than we actually are. We can talk ourselves up and act the part in front of others. But God says what matters most is not the religious performance in public, but the pursuit of holiness in private. While we would benefit from making some of our secret actions more public through confession and repentance, we would also benefit from keeping some of our public actions a bit more private, to avoid seeking the approval of people instead of the approval of God. But how do we know what should be made public? And what things are best kept secret? And how do we decide? We’ll listen to Jesus’ teaching for the answer, in our next series, Best Kept Secret.
