Suffering King

Most people leave limited margin in their fast-paced lives, even for the things they most enjoy and most value. So, when suffering surfaces, it only complicates our already stretched-thin schedules. No one has time for suffering. And certainly no one wants to suffer. But the Bible teaches us, and Jesus’ own life demonstrates, that sometimes God does His best work in us through suffering. But what if some of our suffering is actually a veiled blessing from God? Jesus said, “In this world we will have trouble. But take heart because I have overcome the world.” We understand and experience the first part more than we do the second. We know much of suffering. Even as I write this, the very place where Jesus spoke these words is torn apart by war. There’s no shortage of suffering in our world. But if we allow God to speak to us and shape us through the suffering, perhaps we will discover a greater joy on the other side of suffering and discover the beauty in Jesus’ instruction to “take heart.” Jesus is our model: The King of Kings willingly suffered for our sakes, that we might have an eternity free from suffering and pain. Join us Sundays in November as we learn from the Suffering King.
